It's online and free for kids - I use it with my theory classes and our choir director uses it in a similar fashion as you described. Noteflight also just came out with an iPad app today. Kids can hear their parts, but they can also do theory assignments and composition. You can also embed entire melodies with playback in your class blog.

For the wireless iPad trick I use an app called Reflector (formerly called Reflection). It's much easier to set up than Airserver and it perfectly mirrors anything on your iPad through your laptop and projector. I pop up my iStrobosoft tuner through there during band rehearsals and also throw up a huge metronome sometimes for marching band - works great and it sends both audio and video signals. It's amazing how much more you'll use your iPad and projector in class once your disconnected from the front of the room. Single license is $12.

Re: Burn, Baby Burn!

Andy - What fun it is to hear your "tales from the front." Now you know what your teachers were busy doing all those years that you were the student. My girls were both in band in high school, so I have a great appreciation for the additional time you give to your students to prepare them for competitions and concerts.

Re: Burn, Baby Burn!

Bravo, Andy. Congratulations on your first year and a half. I am sure you have much to be proud of. Working smarter starts with taking a break and it sounds like you are well on your way to doing that this week. Working smarter may also mean working less. That might be a funny thing coming from me, someone who works all the time, but you'll start to make choices that serve you best. You have many people to bounce ideas off of and get support to make smart choices about what to spend your time on. Start deciding on boundaries and make choices at work. Congrats and I look forward to seeing you in February!

Re: It’s Elementary…

I was a student in Mr. E's class from 94-99. I just found out that he passed away and I feel so sad. I saw him a couple of months ago when visiting home from the military but didn't get a chance to speak. He was an awesome teacher. He will be missed

Re: It’s Elementary…

I had attended F.S. Smiling is super contagious and so good for you. Really making an effort to become more positive, even in the toughest situations, has definitely made me a better and happier person.

I can definitely relate to turning the corner at work...this is my first year in elementary and the first few months were a HUGE adjustment for me. It was tough to do anything other than plan lessons and try to stay afloat. It's gotten much easier, and I hope it has for you, too. The students will appreciate you taking the time to get things organized and steady yourself and your relationships will be so much better because of it.

Amen to number 4! I definitely could not have made it through the first part of my school year without people like you and all of the #musedchat peeps! Here's to more interaction and sharing with our MPLN!

Great post, great goals! We will hold each other accountable! :-)

Julie

Re: 2012 Goals

harrerujah :D

Re: 2012 Goals

One day down, 365 to go on the smiling, thanks to Amy! That was 17 years ago for me. I didn't start feeling "older" until about 25 however, when I was in a band directing job, could hear my metabolism hitting the breaks, and was on my way to proposing to my future wife. A wise man once said "Your twenties are when you figure out who you are. Your thirties are when you figure out where you are going." That has been a truth in my life.

Re: Finding the Balance

Hey Andy! You can bring in experts to do podcasts, or with permission, rebroadcast an episode from someone else's relevant topic. Looks like you've got a good start here.

Re: It’s Elementary…

Best of luck Andy. So embrace the wobble and post when you're able or so moved.

As for me, I think I'm gonna take a hiatus from blogging in August -- just like I did last year. http://www.ggci.com/blog2/2....

Re: Where I’ve Been

Yeah... me too.
